La innovación radical tiende a reemplazar ideas, productos, servicios o procesos existentes. Son innovaciones que son muy diferentes o incluso revolucionarias y reemplazan ideas, productos, servicios o procesos existentes y tal vez conducen a mercados que antes no existían. La innovación radical puede conducir a cambios masivos en una industria y a lo que se conoce como destrucción creativa en el mercado. Internet, el carruaje sin caballos, los GPS y la codificación digital de la tecnología de música y video fueron innovaciones radicales que dieron como resultado el desarrollo de nuevos mercados.
Las innovaciones incrementales implican mejoras menores en ideas, productos, servicios y procesos. Son como agregar características únicas a un producto o servicio. Pero incluso las mejoras incrementales pueden tener un efecto radical en el mercado. Por ejemplo, considere las mejoras incrementales en los teléfonos inalámbricos que eventualmente conducen al desarrollo del iPhone de Apple y a las numerosas ofertas de teléfonos inteligentes.
