Son muy útiles en el seguimiento de la diferenciación de productos y procesos. Se pueden utilizar para comprender la evolución, crecimiento y declive de ideas y fenómenos en el mundo físico, el reino vegetal y animal, y la tecnología. Los ciclos de vida más utilizados en los negocios son los ciclos de vida de la tecnología y los ciclos de vida del producto. Se utilizan para rastrear la difusión de tecnologías y productos.
La difusión es la aceptación, adopción y conocimiento de una tecnología o un producto por parte de los individuos. La tecnología y los ciclos de vida del producto son esencialmente los mismos, excepto que el ciclo de vida del producto está enfocado en vender productos mientras que el ciclo de vida de la tecnología está enfocado en la innovación. Los ciclos de vida de la tecnología y del producto constan de cuatro fases que siguen la clásica curva S y consisten en el conocimiento de la tecnología, el crecimiento tecnológico, la madurez tecnológica y una disminución del interés por la tecnología (ver Figura 1.1 “Ciclo de Vida de la Tecnología”). La Figura 1.2 “Perfil del ciclo de vida de la tecnología en 2011" ilustra una instantánea de dónde creemos que pertenecen varias tecnologías en el ciclo de vida en 2011.
