El Kindle de Amazon comenzó muy fuerte y parecía un fuerte contendiente para capturar el mercado de libros electrónicos. El fundador de Apple, Steve Jobs, no quedó impresionado y declaró: “No importa lo bueno o malo que sea el producto, el hecho es que la gente ya no lee”. Markoff (2008). Bueno sí lanzó un lector de libros electrónicos, el iPad, que también tenía funcionalidad adicional. Amazon respondió lanzando tres versiones Kindle y desarrollando una aplicación para iPad para descargar y comprar libros de Amazon. La Figura 5.10 “Diferenciación del iPad” y la Figura 5.11 “Diferenciando el Kindle” ilustran las curvas PD para el iPad y Kindle, respectivamente. Es evidente que la Apple se ha esforzado mucho en desarrollar versiones para una amplia gama de individuos con diferentes sensibilidades de precio en el extremo superior.
