- Una función es lo que hace algo.
- La forma es la experiencia o forma externa.
- El diseño involucra todo lo anterior.
- El sentido implica todo lo anterior más la relación del producto o servicio con las necesidades emocionales y psicosociales.

Una manera muy sencilla de ver todo lo anterior es que las características, la función, la forma, el diseño y el significado son todos atributos, con diferentes niveles de información sobre un producto. Considera el smartphone SuperDuper en la Figura 7.1 “SuperDuper Smartphone”. El teléfono SuperDuper tiene un teclado numérico (atributo, característica, función y forma), con teclas cuadradas iluminadas (atributo, característica y forma), y una pantalla indestructible de alto color (atributo, característica y forma) con un color ónix negro y textura gruesa (atributos, características y forma), que se puede utilizar para llamar y enviar mensajes de texto (atributos, características y funciones), escuchar música estéreo (atributo, característica y función) y localizar amigos dentro de 1 milla (atributo, característica y función). Este teléfono SuperDuper inteligente y futurista (atributo y diseño general) crea sentimientos de conexión, comodidad y seguridad (atributos y significados).
