En 2015, Doug Monahan, el CEO y fundador de iBackpack of Texas, Inc., presentó un paquete revolucionario de tecnología encastrado en una mochila típica. El iBackpack se jactaba de la capacidad de incorporar WiFi/MiFi, un sistema de batería, cables inteligentes de transferencia de energía y un sistema de carga de automóviles, mientras transportaba cuatro computadoras portátiles y sus accesorios. Monahan prometió que el iBackpack sería un “centro de comunicación y la potencia eléctrica correspondiente para estudiantes y profesionales de negocios por igual”. ¹ Para llevar el proyecto al mercado, iBackpack buscó el crowdfunding a través de una campaña de Indiegogo que recaudó 723,395 dólares de 4,041 mecaneros. Se recaudaron $76,694 adicionales de 252 mecaneros de Kickstarter.

En 2016, iBackpack recaudó más de 800,000 dólares para cumplir con los pedidos de los inversores, pero el producto nunca se materializó. La única actualización de la compañía fue una publicación en Facebook aludiendo a problemas de abastecimiento de baterías “seguras”. Para 2017, la campaña de crowdfunding de iBackpack no logró entregar el producto prometido a sus inversionistas. ²^, ³ Según un artículo en el sitio web The Verge en agosto de 2018, los fundadores de iBackpack estaban siendo investigados por la Comisión Federal de Comercio. ⁴ Aunque el crowdfunding puede ser una gran opción para las startups, quienes abusan del sistema pueden verse sujetos a acciones legales.
