Este modelo nos dice que antes de elegir un medio (o género), debes considerar tu contexto, mensaje, audiencia y propósito. En estos momentos, el contexto es especialmente importante porque las comunicaciones en el lugar de trabajo están experimentando un cambio. Durante los últimos 20 años, el correo electrónico se ha hecho cargo de muchos de los trabajos que alguna vez se reservaron para faxes, memorandos y cartas. Ahora, programas de mensajería instantánea como Slack están tomando parte del trabajo que solía hacer el correo electrónico. Las redes sociales también se han hecho cargo de parte del trabajo del correo electrónico en el lugar de trabajo. Por ejemplo, muchas empresas ofrecen servicio al cliente a través de Twitter y Facebook.
A menudo, los estudiantes quieren aprender la manera perfecta de escribir un memo o carta, o tener una plantilla que puedan llenar. Pero debido a que el contexto siempre está cambiando, y debido a que los diferentes lugares de trabajo tienen prácticas diferentes, no es posible decir que haya una forma correcta de escribir cada documento. En cambio, vamos a explorar las diferentes decisiones que intervienen en la elección de un medio, y los diferentes roles que cada medio juega en el lugar de trabajo.
Estas son algunas preguntas que puedes hacerte antes de elegir un género:
- ¿Qué tan rápido necesita mi audiencia esta información?
- ¿Cómo espera recibir esta información mi audiencia?
- ¿Cómo utilizará mi audiencia esta información? Por ejemplo, si estoy informando a mi audiencia sobre nuevas clases de acondicionamiento físico en un gimnasio, ¿sería mejor crear un horario impreso que los participantes pudieran poner en su refrigerador? ¿O preferirían acceder a la información a través de un sitio web, en una aplicación?
- ¿De qué manera se envía normalmente esta información en mi organización?
- ¿Se espera que use una plantilla o construya el trabajo de otra persona?
- ¿Mi audiencia tiene algún requisito de accesibilidad?
