Esperamos que las empresas reconozcan temas de importancia social y los aborden de manera responsable. Las empresas que hacen esto ganan reputación como buenos ciudadanos corporativos y disfrutan de ciertos beneficios, como la capacidad de mantener clientes satisfechos, atraer capital y reclutar y retener empleados talentosos. Pero las empresas no se vuelven buenos ciudadanos corporativos de la noche a la mañana Aprender a identificar y desarrollar la capacidad de atender inquietudes sociales lleva tiempo y requiere compromiso. La tarea es ardua porque tantos temas diferentes son importantes para tantos miembros diferentes del público, temas que van desde el medio ambiente, hasta el bienestar de los trabajadores (tanto en el país como en el extranjero), la equidad con los clientes, el respeto a la comunidad en la que opera una empresa.
