Coge tu bolsa para libros, mochila, maletín o lo que sea que lleves tus útiles escolares y ábrelo. Ordena el contenido en dos pilas: artículos hechos en Estados Unidos y artículos hechos en cualquier otro lugar. Ahora bien, ¿qué tan grande es la pila de cosas hechas en Estados Unidos en comparación con los artículos importados? Algunos pueden estar etiquetados con la marca de la tienda y decir algo así como “Fabricado en China para la Compañía X.” Otros pueden simplemente tener una etiqueta que diga “Made in the Philippines”. ¿Cuántos países diferentes están representados por el contenido de su bolsa de libros? ¿Se da cuenta de que acaba de identificar una pequeña muestra de países que son socios comerciales de Estados Unidos?
Ahora deberías tener dos pilas de artículos (fabricados en Estados Unidos y fabricados en otros lugares). Ahora, toma todo lo que no se hace en Estados Unidos y déjalo a un lado. A partir de este punto a lo único que tienes acceso son las cosas que quedan en el stack de “100 por ciento hecho en EUA”. ¿Qué te queda? Tendrás suerte si tienes un lápiz y una goma de borrar. Es el negocio global y el comercio global lo que te da acceso a todo lo demás en tu mochila.
Comprender el entorno empresarial global es fundamental para todos los que consumen cualquier bien, servicio o recurso. Hasta que entendamos cómo opera el entorno empresarial global, por qué las empresas y las naciones comercian, y las fuerzas que trabajan en el mercado global, somos consumidores ingenuos. Es necesario que te informen para que puedas tomar decisiones sobre dónde trabajarás, para quién trabajarás, a quién votarás y a qué políticas exteriores apoyarás u opondrás. Sin entender el entorno empresarial global, es posible que te encuentres enfrentando la vida diaria con nada más que un lápiz y una goma de borrar.
