“Una célula microscópica de cianobacterias fotosintéticas constituye un complejo de fábricas químicas que llevan a cabo multitud de procesos bioquímicos. Alimentados por energía solar y operando en condiciones ambientales, estos organismos toman dióxido de carbono y nitrógeno del aire y simples iones inorgánicos disueltos en el agua y producen todas las moléculas de vida que necesitan para su metabolismo y reproducción. En eones pasados este tipo de organismos generaban todo el oxígeno que hay en la atmósfera terrestre. Por todo su conocimiento de la química sería imposible para los humanos reproducir los procesos químicos de estas notables bacterias”
