El componente final de un espectrómetro de masas es el sistema de datos. Esta parte del instrumento ha sufrido cambios revolucionarios en los últimos veinte años. Ha evolucionado desde placas fotográficas y grabadoras de gráficos de tiras hasta sistemas de datos que controlan el instrumento, adquieren cientos de espectros en un minuto y buscan decenas de miles de espectros de referencia para identificar un desconocido.
