Este capítulo aplica conceptos introducidos en capítulos anteriores al tipo de sistema más simple, uno que consiste en una sustancia pura o un solo componente en una sola fase. El sistema tiene tres variables independientes si está abierto, y dos si está cerrado. Se derivan relaciones entre diversas propiedades de una sola fase, incluyendo temperatura, presión y volumen. Se introducen los conceptos importantes de estados estándar y potencial químico.
