La teoría del enlace de valencia es una de las dos teorías básicas, junto con la teoría orbital molecular, que se desarrollaron para utilizar los métodos de la mecánica cuántica para explicar la unión química. Se centra en cómo se combinan los orbitales atómicos de los átomos disociados para dar enlaces químicos individuales cuando se forma una molécula. En contraste, la teoría orbital molecular tiene orbitales que cubren toda la molécula.
