    Un problema con el potencial de ionización y la afinidad electrónica es que se definen y miden como reacciones en fase gaseosa. Aunque se han determinado valores para fragmentos moleculares, todavía es difícil correlacionar con las tendencias de reacción en solución. Para superar esta cuestión se desarrolló el concepto de electronegatividad.

    La electronegatividad se define como la tendencia de un átomo en una molécula a atraer electrones hacia sí misma. Si bien se han desarrollado varias escalas de electronegatividad, la de Linus Pauling (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\) .6) es la que más se utiliza. En el cuadro\(\PageIndex{1}\) .5 se muestran los valores seleccionados de electronegatividad de Pauling (unidad menos).

    La ventaja de la escala de electronegatividad de Pauling es que permite predecir el comportamiento general. Por ejemplo, cuanto mayor sea la dierencia en electronegatividad entre dos elementos, más carácter iónico o más polar es la interacción de unión. Así, un enlace H-O (3.5 - 2.1 = 1.4) es más polar que un enlace H-S (2.5 2.1 = 0.4).
