Durante más de una generación en el siglo XXI, los adultos han estado tratando de descubrir cómo crear escuelas que reflejen la sociedad y la cultura cambiantes. Para esas generaciones, los adultos han hablado de la necesidad de crear “escuelas del siglo XXI”. (Tengo una ex compañera que se retiraría cada vez que escuchaba esa frase. “Es demasiado tarde”, diría, “va a terminar antes de que dejemos de hablar de construir escuelas para ello”). Estos adultos han estado basando todas sus recomendaciones en suposiciones antiguas y anticuadas sobre la enseñanza y el aprendizaje y la tecnología. A los problemas que surgen de esto se agrava la velocidad a la que todo cambia: lo que enseñamos, cómo enseñamos y las herramientas que tenemos para enseñar cambian mucho más rápidamente que en generaciones anteriores.
Lo que me ha quedado claro en el tiempo desde que comencé mi carrera en el campo, e incluso desde que comencé a redactar este libro, son las escuelas que necesitamos ahora, y que seguiremos necesitando mucho después de que me haya jubilado serán lugares donde gran pericia se une para crear un lugar que no puede ser creado por ningún un individuo. Nuestras escuelas futuras dependen de:
- Tecnología de la información que siempre está funcionando y disponible para todos los estudiantes y profesores.
- Enseñanza y aprendizaje que sea diverso y receptivo a las necesidades de maestros y alumnos y que prepare a todos para el futuro impredecible.
- Decisiones tomadas que aseguren que estas escuelas existan y que todas las familias puedan enviar a sus hijos a alguna de estas escuelas.
