En capítulos anteriores, discutimos la diferencia entre las fuentes serif y sans serif. Sin embargo, como se podría imaginar, la historia es mucho más compleja que eso. Hay muchas categorías de fuentes más específicas. Estas categorías se basan en fuentes que comparten ciertas características. Consideramos cinco clasificaciones básicas de fuentes aunque hay más. Para crear contraste, mezcle fuentes de diferentes clasificaciones. Nunca mezcle dos fuentes de la misma categoría, se verá como un error. Las clasificaciones son adaptadas de Robin Williams y se muestran aquí ampliadas para resaltar las diferencias.
