En este capítulo, se le ha introducido el concepto de sistemas de información. Hemos revisado varias definiciones, enfocándonos en componentes de sistemas de información: tecnología (hardware, software, datos, comunicación en red), personas y procesos. Hemos revisado la evolución de la tecnología y cómo ha evolucionado el uso comercial de los sistemas de información a lo largo de los años, desde el uso de grandes computadoras mainframe para el procesamiento de números, pasando por la introducción de la PC y redes para aplicaciones empresariales, hasta la era de la computación móvil para tanto de negocios como de aplicaciones personales. Durante cada una de estas fases, las innovaciones en tecnología permitieron a empresas e individuos integrar la tecnología más profundamente.
Es una conclusión insuperable que casi todas, si no todas, las empresas están utilizando sistemas de información. Sin embargo, la historia también nos ha demostrado que algunas empresas son muy exitosas y otras son fracasos. Para cuando complete este libro, debe comprender el importante papel del IS para ayudar a mejorar la eficiencia y el conocimiento para aprovechar el IS para desarrollar ventajas competitivas sostenidas para cada empresa o su propia carrera.
