Los diodos emisores de luz (LED) producen luz a partir de la electricidad utilizando materiales semiconductores. Operan a partir de un voltaje de CC bajo y producen poco calor porque no hay filamento incandescente. Están disponibles en una gama de colores, siendo el rojo, el verde y el amarillo los más comunes.
La pantalla numérica de siete segmentos (Figura\(\PageIndex{2}\)) utiliza un LED para cada sección para crear diferentes números del 0 al 9.
