Since the preterite is used for completed actions, some verbs change meaning when they are used in this tense. They are
conocer = to meet Conocimos a la profesora el lunes. We met the teacher on Monday.
saber = to find out Supimos las noticias ayer. We found out the news yesterday.
poder = to manage; to succeed Pudimos resolver la rompecabeza. We managed to/succeed in solving he puzzle.
no poder = to fail to No pude correr la carrera. I failed to run the race.
querer = to try Quise hacer la tarea, pero no la entendí. I tried to do the homework, but I did not understand it.
no querer = to refuse to No quise ver el programa. I refused to see the program.
Read through this list of verbs again. Remember, the preterite is used for completed actions.
With practice, using these verbs preterite tense can make a lot of sense. So, let's practice.
Práctica.
A. Translate each sentence into Spanish.
1. We tried to write a poem.
2. We refused to drink the coffee.
3. I met the new student.
4. You (fam.) found out the answer.
5. She failed to find the key.
6. You (form., pl.) succeeded in memorizing the verbs.
7. We met the new president.
8. I found out the the date.
9. He refused to go to the gym.
10. They tried to sing the song.
11. They succeeded in buying the gift.
12. You (form., s.) failed to finish the pizza.
B. Read through the list of these six verbs again. Which of these meaning changes makes the most sense to you? Which of them will be easiest to remember? Which will be the most difficult? Why?
C. La Música.The songs No Quise Mirar by Carla Morrison and Hasta Que Te Conocí by Maná both have verbs that change meaning in the preterite. Listen to the two songs. Then, pick one and listen to it again. This time, write the verbs that you hear and try to understand the main idea of the song and why the singer uses the verbs in the preterite tense.
D. Reread the list of verbs one more time. Then write your own examples of sentences with three different verbs.
