The subjunctive with denial and negativity

Some verbs and expressions indicate denial or negativity.  The word in front of a verb or expression can also express denial or negativity.  It is important to read the first part of a sentence to decide if it indicates denial or negativity.  It is also a good idea to review some of the verbs and expressions we have already studied to explain other parts of WEDDING. For example

No creo que siempre sea malo usar nuestro teléfono.                                                                                                                                                                      I do not think it is always bad to use our phone.                                                                                                                                                                            I do not think === > denial, negativity = present subjunctive

Creo que uses tu teléfono demasiado.                                                                                                                                                                                            I think that you use your phone too much.                                                                                                                                                                                      I think === > no denial, no negativity = present indicative

Dudamos que la profesora cancele clase.                                                                                                                                                                                        We doubt that the teacher cancels class.                                                                                                                                                                                        I doubt ===> doubt = present subjunctive

No dudamos que el subjuntivo es importante.                                                                                                                                                                                We do not doubt that the subjunctive is important.                                                                                                                                                                        We do not doubt ===> no doubt = present indicative

No es cierto que sepamos todo.                                                                                                                                                                                                    It is not certain that we know everything.                                                                                                                                                                                      It is not certain ===> doubt = present subjunctive

Es cierto que siempre hacemos la tarea.                                                                                                                                                                                        It is certain that we always do our homework.

Some words and expressions that indicate negativity are

    ¿creer?                    do you believe

    dudar                      to doubt

    Es dudoso                It is doubtful

    negar                       to deny

    no creer                    to not believe

    no dudar                   to not doubt

No es cierto               It is not certain

No es evidente           It is not evident

No es seguro             It is not sure

No es verdad             It is not true

no parecer que           to not seem that

    no pensar                   to not think

no suponer                 to not suppose that

    ¿pensar?                    do you think
