     Artist biography: David Guillermo Murillo

    My name is David Guillermo Murillo. I am a 27-year-old graduate of Northern Illinois University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology with double minors in Latin American Studies and Art. I am the proud son of Mexican immigrant parents, Lorena and Refugio Murillo, and a first-generation college graduate.

    My academic journey has deepened my appreciation for education as both a privilege and a responsibility, particularly within culturally diverse spaces. My long-term goal is to integrate my background in psychology with my passion for visual art to pursue a career in Art Therapy.

    The unwavering support of my family and friends has sustained me through every challenge. I remain committed to creating work that honors culture, language, and identity, while contributing to spaces where education and heritage can coexist meaningfully. Thank you to my parents for a life of endless love, my older brother Sergio whose resilience has shown me what strength really means, and to my little brother Alexander for keeping my inner child alive with endless nights of anime watching. Thank you to my friends Ariana, Ryan, Hannah, Natalie, and Adrian who have always supported my art and kept me grounded. 

    I extend my sincere gratitude to Dra. Nancy Dominguez-Fret and Dra. Megan Tzeitel Marshall for their belief in my artistic capabilities, and to my family and friends whose encouragement has made this journey possible. The world is a beautiful place, and I am incredibly grateful to be a part of it.

    Image Symbolism

    Through Spanish for Heritage Speakers, I & II, taught by Dra. Nancy Dominguez-Fret at NIU, I reconnected deeply with my cultural identity. Spanish carries beauty and legitimacy regardless of national origin. Throughout the creative process, I reflected on transformative classroom moments, which inspired the layered symbolism within this piece.

    • On the left stands a golden temple crowned with the letter Ñ. The Ñ symbolizes linguistic identity and the expectations of grammatical precision within Spanish. The temple form, however, serves as a reminder that language must also honor its Indigenous foundations. Structure and ancestry coexist.
    • The surrounding green land and blue sky reference the literal beauty and cultural richness of Spanish-speaking countries. In the background, the textured sun pays homage to the phrase “Hijos del Sol” or “Children of the Sun,” a concept associated with Indigenous pride and Mexican cosmology. The sun functions as both ancestral presence and enduring vitality.
    • To the right, musical symbols and drums reference the Afro-Latino roots of Puerto Rican culture. Music has historically served as resistance, storytelling, and cultural preservation. These elements emphasize that language extends beyond text into rhythm, sound, and embodied tradition.
    • At the center stands a Latina woman with a darker complexion. As discussions of colorism continue across Latin America, I intentionally highlighted the beauty of darker skin tones. Her braid represents femininity rooted in strength, ancestral continuity, and connection to land. Her clothing similarly affirms cultural celebration as a form of preservation.
    • Lastly, the monarch butterfly painted blue. The metaphor of transformation, acknowledgment of migration, and most importantly: a symbol for hope. Hope is profound and present in us all. All readers of this textbook and future students of this class are active participants in a peaceful resistance to fight for the right of cultural and linguistic preservation. May you all persevere in your endeavors and be inspired to hope!
