Para empezar: ¿Alguna vez has escuchado el término hablante de herencia? ¿Qué crees que signifique esta etiqueta? ¿Prefieres otra etiqueta? ¿Cuál? En el campo de la enseñanza de español para hablantes de herencia, se han postulado diversas definiciones para esta etiqueta. La definición más usada es la que propuso la doctora Guadalupe Valdés (2000) en la cual describe que un hablante de herencia es una persona que:
Sin embargo, otros académicos han planteado que la etiqueta hablante de herencia también describe a personas que tienen una conexión cultural a un país o comunidad hispanohablante y tienen la meta de seguir desarrollando sus habilidades lingüísticas del español. Para pensar y reflexionar: ¿Es necesario que una persona hable español para poder llamarse hablante de herencia? Paso 2: Los maestros de español y los hablantes de herencia
Instrucciones: Ve el siguiente video de la serie Saved by the Bell titulado The racist Spanish teacher y después contesta las preguntas.

- ¿Qué piensas tú sobre tu español?
- Comparte un comentario, pregunta o sentimiento.
- Toma dos minutos para leer algunos de los comentarios después del video. Escoge dos y analízalos con tu grupo.
Paso 3: Escucha el testimonio de Melissa Lozada donde cuenta la historia de su español. Anota cuatro datos interesantes sobre su historia mientras la escuchas.
Paso 4: ¿Quién soy yo?
Instrucciones: Diseña un visual con imágenes que contesten las siguientes preguntas sobre tu identidad. Prepárate para presentarte a la clase usando este visual. Puedes usar español, Spanglish o inglés. Observa el modelo de la profesora Domínguez-Fret, y empieza a diseñar el tuyo usando las siguientes preguntas como guía.
