Shawn T. O'Neil obtuvo una licenciatura en informática de la Universidad del Norte de Michigan, y posteriormente una maestría y un doctorado en la misma materia por la Universidad de Notre Dame. Su investigación pasada y actual se centra en la bioinformática. O'Neil ha desarrollado e impartido diversos cursos de biología computacional tanto en Notre Dame como en la Universidad Estatal de Oregón, donde actualmente trabaja en el Centro de Investigación del Genoma y Biocomputación.
