Los teóricos del procesamiento de la información suelen equiparar la mente humana como análoga al procesamiento por computadora. La mente utiliza estructuras jerárquicas donde un alumno procesa el conocimiento y las ideas en la mente atendiendo, recibiendo, procesando, almacenando y recuperando el conocimiento de la memoria. Todo conocimiento tiene tres aspectos: declarativo, procesal o condicional. El conocimiento declarativo es el conocimiento de esto o aquello, por ejemplo, los pingüinos tienen plumas o los árboles crecen al convertir el dióxido de carbono y la luz solar en oxígeno (fotosíntesis). El conocimiento procesal es el saber hacer las cosas o los pasos/estrategias involucradas en cómo hacer las cosas, por ejemplo, los pasos involucrados en multiplicar números mixtos o las mejores formas de hacer un sándwich de atún. El conocimiento condicional implica conocer el cuándo y el por qué aplicar los otros dos tipos de conocimiento, por ejemplo, los lectores rozan periódicos para obtener la esencia, pero aplican lectura cercana a la literatura o textos difíciles para desarrollar entendimientos más profundos.
