    Las líneas de transmisión generalmente transmiten señales eléctricas y energía de punto a punto a lo largo de trayectorias arbitrarias con alta eficiencia, y también pueden servir como elementos de circuito. En la mayoría de las líneas de transmisión, los campos eléctrico y magnético apuntan puramente transversales a la dirección de propagación; tales ondas se denominan ondas electromagnéticas transversales o TEM, y tales líneas de transmisión se denominan líneas TEM. El carácter básico de las ondas TEM se discute en la Sección 7.1, los efectos de las uniones se introducen en la Sección 7.2, y los usos y análisis de las líneas TEM con uniones se tratan en la Sección 7.3.
