Gran parte de la programación científica implica manejar álgebra lineal numérica. Esto se debe a que una gran cantidad de problemas numéricos que ocurren en la ciencia pueden reducirse a problemas de álgebra lineal. Es muy importante saber formular estos problemas de álgebra lineal, y cómo resolverlos numéricamente.
