    Las disciplinas de humanidades estudian aspectos de la sociedad y la cultura humana. En el Renacimiento, el término contrastaba con la divinidad y se refería a lo que ahora se llama clásicos, el área principal de estudio secular en las universidades de la época. Hoy en día, las humanidades se definen con mayor frecuencia como cualquier campo de estudio fuera de la formación profesional, las matemáticas y las ciencias naturales y sociales. Utilizan métodos que son principalmente críticos o especulativos y tienen un elemento histórico significativo, a diferencia de los enfoques principalmente empíricos de las ciencias naturales; sin embargo, a diferencia de las ciencias, las humanidades no tienen una historia general.
