Criaturas mitad hombre, mitad caballo
Los centauros (a veces llamados hipocentauros) eran criaturas con el torso y la cabeza de un hombre y el cuerpo de un caballo. Como corresponde a su estado en parte bestia, en parte humano, tuvieron problemas para controlar sus pasiones. Además, tenían un fuerte gusto por el vino pero no podían contener su licor. En la boda de los lapitas, Peirithoüs, todos se emborracharon mucho y secuestraron a todas las mujeres presentes, incluida la novia. Los lapitas se defendieron, junto con el buen amigo de Peirithoüs, Teseo, y la mayoría de los centauros fueron asesinados o desterrados. Había, sin embargo, algunos centauros civilizados, como Pholus, que ayudó a Heracles en su batalla contra los centauros [ver los 12 trabajos de Heracles], y el inmortal Quirón, quien se desempeñó como maestro y mentor de varios héroes, como Jason, Asclepio y Aquiles.
