Debido a que no había hoteles en la antigua Grecia, los viajeros tuvieron que confiar en la generosidad de las personas que vivían en la zona por la que viajaban. Un viajero podría llamar a cualquier puerta e inmediatamente lo invitarían a entrar, al menos en teoría. Xenia está protegida por Zeus y tiene reglas de conducta específicas. El anfitrión debe aceptar a cualquier viajero que venga y ofrecerle un baño y una comida sin preguntar por el nombre de la persona. Después de que el huésped haya comido, el anfitrión ahora puede preguntar el nombre y lugar de origen del viajero. El huésped tiene la responsabilidad de tratar con respeto la casa y las posesiones de su anfitrión así como de proporcionar su nombre y antecedentes cuando se le solicite. Cuando el invitado se despida de su anfitrión, los dos intercambiarán regalos como muestra de su nueva amistad. Una vez que se ha establecido una relación xenia entre dos familias, puede durar generaciones, proporcionando a ambas familias un lugar para dormir en futuros viajes.
