Muestra un poco (no más del 3%) de la única molécula de ADN liberada de un solo cromosoma humano. (El cromosoma fue tratado para extirpar sus histonas). Recordando que esto es 3% del ADN de solo uno de los 46 cromosomas en la célula diploide humana, se puede apreciar el problema que enfrenta la célula de cómo separar sin error estas grandes longitudes de ADN sin crear horribles enredos.
La solución a este problema es:
- Duplicar cada cromosoma durante la fase S del ciclo celular.
- Esto produce díadas, cada una compuesta por 2 cromátidas hermanas idénticas. Estos se mantienen unidos por un anillo de proteínas llamado cohesina.
- Condensar los cromosomas en una forma compacta. Esto requiere ATP y complejos proteicos llamados condensinas.
- Separar las cromátidas hermanas y
- Distribuir estos por igual entre las dos celdas hijas.
