No producen flores, frutos o semillas. Hay dos principales linajes evolutivos distintos: licófitas (Lycopodiopsida) y helechos (Polypodiopsida) con aproximadamente 12,000 especies en todo el mundo (PPG I, 2016). A escala evolutiva, los helechos están más estrechamente relacionados con las plantas semilleras que con las licófitas, pero estas dos clases de plantas generalmente se agrupan como plantas vasculares sin semillas porque comparten varias características. Estas relaciones aún están siendo estudiadas por biólogos evolutivos y es probable que se aclaren en un futuro próximo.
Los licófitos y helechos comparten un ciclo de vida similar con gametofitos y esporofitos fotosintéticos independientes, siendo el esporófito la fase dominante. Esto es diferente de las briofitas, donde el esporófito crece y permanece adherido al gametofito, y el gametofito es dominante. Los esporofitos de las plantas vasculares suelen ser grandes y visibles, teniendo órganos vegetales diferenciados, como hojas, raíces y tallos, mientras que los gametofitos son pequeños. Los licófitos tienen microfilos (hojas con venas simples no ramificadas), mientras que otras plantas vasculares (helechos, gimnospermas y angiospermas) tienen megafilas (hojas con múltiples venas ramificadas).
