Esto no quiere decir que fue la primera gimnosperma. Del registro fósil, parece que la mayoría de las gimnospermas tempranas se extinguieron. La única especie que queda en este grupo, Ginkgo biloba, es un fósil vivo prácticamente inalterado de sus ancestros fosilizados. Es posible que esta especie solo se mantuviera viva debido a los esfuerzos de cultivo de los monjes budistas por sus propiedades medicinales. Esta especie también es de larga vida, un solo árbol puede vivir miles de años, y es resistente a la mayoría de las plagas. El ginkgo biloba puede ser reconocido por las siguientes características:
- Hojas caducifolias, pero resistentes, en forma de abanico
- Dioico (di- significa dos, oico que significa casa), con estrobili macho y hembra en plantas separadas. Las plantas hembras tienen óvulos emparejados en las puntas de las ramas, los machos tienen estructuras parecidas a gatuna que producen polen.
- Polinizado por el viento
