- Fue a principios de la década de 1970. Susan (seudónimo), una estudiante universitaria de segundo año, quería convertirse en médica, por lo que fue a platicar con su profesor de biología sobre el programa de pre-medicina en su escuela. El profesor menospreció su interés por la medicina y se negó a discutir el programa. Las mujeres, él le aconsejó, deberían simplemente convertirse en esposas y madres y dejar el doctoring a los hombres.
- 8.2: Comprender el sexo y el género
- Si bien los términos sexo y género a veces se usan indistintamente y de hecho se complementan entre sí, se refieren a diferentes aspectos de lo que significa ser mujer u hombre en cualquier sociedad.
- 8.3: Feminismo y Sexismo
- El feminismo y el sexismo son generalmente dos caras de una misma moneda. El feminismo se refiere a la creencia de que mujeres y hombres deben tener igualdad de oportunidades en la vida económica, política y social, mientras que el sexismo se refiere a la creencia en los estereotipos tradicionales de roles de género y en la desigualdad inherente entre hombres y mujeres. El sexismo es así paralelo al concepto de prejuicio racial y étnico. Se dice que tanto las mujeres como las personas de color, por razones biológicas y/o culturales, carecen de ciertas cualidades para el éxito.
- 8.4: Desigualdad de Género
- Nosotros hemos dicho que el movimiento de mujeres cambió la vida estadounidense de muchas maneras pero que la desigualdad de género persiste. Veamos ejemplos de tal desigualdad, gran parte de ella tomando la forma de discriminación institucional, que puede ocurrir aunque no se pretenda que suceda. Comenzamos con la desigualdad de género en los ingresos y el lugar de trabajo para luego pasar a algunas otras esferas de la vida.
- 8.5: Violencia contra las mujeres- Violación y Pornografía
- Las mujeres tienen muchas más probabilidades que los hombres de ser violadas y agredidas sexualmente. También es mucho más probable que sean retratados como víctimas de violencia pornográfica en Internet y en videos, revistas y otros medios. Por último, las mujeres tienen más probabilidades que los hombres de ser víctimas de violencia doméstica, o violencia entre cónyuges y otras personas con relaciones íntimas. El carácter de género de estos actos contra las mujeres las distingue de la violencia que sufren los hombres.
- 8.6: Los beneficios y costos de ser hombre
- La mayor parte de la discusión hasta el momento ha sido sobre las mujeres, y con buena razón: en una sociedad sexista como la nuestra, las mujeres son el sexo subordinado, desigual. Pero “género” significa más que “femenino”, y algunos comentarios sobre los hombres están en orden.
