Quizás debido a los orígenes del campo en la cibernética, así como a la suposición fundacional de que la cognición es procesamiento de información, la ciencia cognitiva inicialmente parecía más unificada que la psicología. Sin embargo, como resultado de diferentes interpretaciones de la suposición fundacional y visiones dramáticamente divergentes del significado del término procesamiento de información, surgieron tres escuelas separadas: la ciencia cognitiva clásica, la ciencia cognitiva conexionista y la ciencia cognitiva encarnada.
