El punto P está inicialmente por debajo del centro del círculo, pero, en lugar de estar en el borde del círculo, su distancia desde el centro del círculo es\(r\). Si\(r < a\), el camino descrito por P será un cicloide contraído; si\( r > a \), el camino es un cicloide extendido. (Creo que hay un caso para usar esta nomenclatura al revés, pero la mayoría de los autores parecen usar “contratado” para\(r < a\) y “extendido” para\( r > a\).) No debería tardar mucho en convencerse, por argumentos similares a los de la Sección 19.1, de que las ecuaciones paramétricas a un cicloide contraído o extendido son
