Piense de nuevo en las consecuencias económicas y humanas del aumento del nivel del mar. Las áreas desarrolladas se inundarían a un gran costo, o, tendríamos que gastar cantidades desmesuradas de dinero “público” para protegerlas. En zonas como Bangaladesh, el aumento del nivel del mar acabaría con la producción agrícola y provocaría una enorme pérdida de vidas (que ya ocurre durante los ciclones en el Océano Índico).
El aumento del nivel del mar provocará inexorablemente que la zona costera “dé un paso atrás” tal como ha ocurrido en los últimos 18 mil años, ya que el ataque de las olas erosiona acantilados y mueve la arena de playas más lejanas en tierra y costa afuera. Nuestras playas favoritas de la isla barrera evolucionarán, pero las casas en ellas serán destruidas o trasladadas de regreso a un gran costo.
