La tiza es una variedad de piedra caliza suave, de grano fino, de color blanco a grisáceo que se compone de los restos esqueléticos calcáreos de organismos marinos microscópicos, incluidos los cocolitos y los foraminíferos. Algunas de las variedades más puras pueden tener hasta 99 por ciento de carbonato de calcio (ver Figura 6.82). Los acantilados blancos de Dover, Inglaterra, son una de las características paisajísticas más icónicas del Reino Unido. Los Acantilados Blancos consisten en tiza de la edad cretácica depositada hace unos 89 a 85 millones de años en condiciones más tropicales que las que existen en la región hoy en día. Las capas de tiza alcanzan casi 500 metros de espesor. El sedimento del que se formó la tiza era de cocolitoporo.
