Formaciones rocosas sedimentarias
Una formación rocosa es la unidad primaria de estratigrafía, consistente en una sucesión de estratos útiles para mapeo o descripción. Una formación rocosa típica consiste en una litología única (tipo de roca) que tiene una edad geológica relativamente definida y se considera mapeable (ocurre en toda el área o región, tanto en la superficie como en el subsuelo. Las formaciones rocosas pueden ser de origen ígneo, sedimentario o metamórfico. Las formaciones rocosas sedimentarias conservan información (incluyendo fósiles y estructuras sedimentarias) sobre los ambientes sedimentarios en los que se formaron. Las figuras 6-87 a 6-89 son ejemplos de formaciones rocosas sedimentarias marinas.
