La pata de un gato es la huella de que una brisa ligera que arruina pequeñas áreas de una superficie de agua. Cuando se genera por viento ligero en aguas abiertas, un nombre náutico para ellos son las ondas de pata de gato, ya que pueden parecerse a huellas de patas (Figura 10.20). Las brisas ligeras que agitan ondas tan pequeñas también se conocen a veces como patas de gato. En el océano abierto, olas de superficie oceánica mucho más grandes (mares y olas) pueden ser el resultado de la coalescencia de olas onduladas más pequeñas causadas por el viento.
Un chubasco es una repentina ráfaga violenta de viento o una tormenta localizada. Una línea de chubascos es una línea de tormentas eléctricas que se pueden formar a lo largo o por delante de un frente frío. Contiene fuertes precipitaciones, granizo, relámpagos frecuentes, fuertes vientos en línea recta y posiblemente tornados y surcos de agua. En el mar, se utiliza una tormenta para describir un cambio relativamente rápido en el clima de clima tranquilo o templado a vientos fuertes repentinos y precipitaciones intensas, generalmente asociadas con el paso de un frente frío.
