Las olas pícaras son grandes, impredecibles y peligrosas. Las olas pícaras (también llamadas 'olas de tormenta extrema') son aquellas olas que son mayores que el doble del tamaño de las olas circundantes. A menudo vienen inesperadamente de direcciones distintas al viento y las olas predominantes. Muchos reportes de olas de tormenta extremas los describen repentinos “muros de agua”. A menudo son de lados empinados y se asocian con abrevaderos inusualmente profundos. Algunas ondas deshonestas son el resultado de la interferencia constructiva de oleadas que viajan a diferentes velocidades y direcciones. A medida que estas olas pasan unas a otras, sus crestas, depresiones y longitudes de onda a veces coinciden y se refuerzan entre sí. Este proceso produce olas grandes e imponentes que rápidamente se forman y desaparecen. Si los oleajes están viajando aproximadamente en la misma dirección, estas olas masivas pueden durar varios minutos antes de disminuir. Las olas pícaras también se pueden formar cuando las olas de tormenta se mueven contra una corriente fuerte, lo que resulta en un acortamiento de la longitud de onda y aumenta su amplitud. Las grandes olas de rouge de este tipo se experimentan frecuentemente en la Corriente del Golfo y las corrientes de Agulhas (Figura 10.24).
