Producción Primaria
La productividad primaria es la velocidad a la que la energía se convierte en sustancias orgánicas en una región o ecosistema. La energía se convierte a través de organismos autotróficos (autoalimentados), convirtiendo la energía solar o química en biomasa. Básicamente, la producción primaria es la generación de alimentos al hacer materia orgánica a partir de materia inorgánica.
El proceso primario es la fotosíntesis (en aguas superficiales poco profundas), y pequeña cantidad de quimiosíntesis (en respiraderos profundos y subterráneos). La energía solar es la principal fuente de energía en la producción de biomasa en los océanos globales, con cantidades comparativamente traza provenientes de fuentes quimiosintéticas.
