Fotosíntesis
Las plantas verdes, las algas y algunas bacterias utilizan la luz solar para sintetizar alimentos a partir del dióxido de carbono y el agua. Estos organismos prosperan con la luz solar con requerimientos mínimos de nutrientes. Utilizan el agua y la energía de la luz solar para convertir el CO 2 atmosférico en compuestos orgánicos, un proceso llamado fijación de carbono. Un subproducto es el oxígeno (O 2) liberado en el agua, y eventualmente, la atmósfera.
La fotosíntesis en las plantas generalmente involucra la clorofila del pigmento verde (pero también otros colores y compuestos) y genera oxígeno como subproducto. El proceso es:
6 H 2 O + 6 CO 2 = C 6 H 12 O 6 (glucosa) + 6O 2
En los océanos, la fotosíntesis se completa mediante microscopía y macroscopía plantas.
