Bacterias fotosintéticas
Las bacterias son de tamaño muy pequeño, y muchas variedades. Algunos han evolucionado para ser capaces de fotosíntesis (llamadas bacterias fotosintéticas). Contribuyen en gran medida a la producción primaria en ciertas partes de los océanos, y pueden
aportar hasta el 50% de la biomasa mundial.
Las cianobacterias (comúnmente llamadas algas verdeazuladas) son algas fotosintéticas comunes en ambientes marinos y de agua dulce. Las cianobacterias contienen clorofila mientras que otras formas de bacterias contienen bacterioclorofila. Aunque la bacterioclorofila se asemeja a la clorofila, absorbe luz de una longitud de onda más larga que la clorofila. Los tipos comunes son las cianobacterias en el medio marino que incluyen algas doradas y algas verdes.
