La Figura 13.22 muestra la productividad neta de los océanos observada a partir de datos satelitales. La Figura 13.23 compara la productividad oceánica con las regiones de cobertura vegetal en la tierra. En general, las plantas en tierra tienen acceso a una luz más concentrada, pero la disponibilidad de agua y nutrientes son un factor de clima y geología. Aunque los bosques tropicales representan un gran volumen de biomasa, el volumen es una fracción de la cantidad de biomasa en los océanos debido a las diferencias en la superficie. La productividad en los océanos está influenciada por factores atmosféricos y oceanográficos:
- Trópicos: Luz solar confiable pero la fuerte termoclina tropical evita la mezcla de agua fría y rica en nutrientes profundos. El agua tibia en la parte superior es demasiado flotante. La excepción a esto son las áreas de arrecifes de coral.
- Templado: Luz solar confiable y termoclina débil. Zona más productiva. En California obtenemos mucha producción en el invierno ya que ahí es cuando nos levantamos de nuestros vientos costeros.
- Regiones polares: Muchos nutrientes poco o nada de termoclina. La luz solar limitada sólo en los pocos meses de verano, pero es altamente productiva.
