Robert Yeats es miembro de la Asociación Americana para el Avance de la Ciencia y de la Sociedad Geológica de América. Es el consultor senior y socio de Earth Consultants International, una firma internacional enfocada en peligros sísmicos, y también profesor emérito en la Universidad Estatal de Oregon, donde una cátedra dotada ha sido nombrada en su honor. Cuenta con décadas de experiencia en geología sísmica a nivel mundial, incluyendo actuar como presidente de un grupo de trabajo activo de fallas del Programa Internacional de Litosfera durante varios años y escribir cuatro libros anteriores: Geología de los terremotos (con Kerry Sieh y Clarence R. Allen; Oxford University Press), Vivir con Terremotos en California, Vivir con terremotos en el noroeste del Pacífico (primera y segunda ediciones; OSU Press) y fallas activas del mundo (Cambridge University Press). Un quinto libro, Earthquake Time Bombs, será publicado en 2015 por Cambridge University Press.
