Mark Twain, como muchos de los autores de esta sección, es más conocido por, quizás, lo que podría considerarse La gran novela americana: Huckleberry Finn. Twain prácticamente inventó la comedia stand-up con su serie de conferencias, e hizo aceptable la dicción coloquial en la literatura. Y también incursionó en el tipo de fantasía del viaje en el tiempo —en el que el personaje se mueve a diferentes lugares y épocas sin explicación científica— en esta historia.
