Las fórmulas a este punto aplican al sistema si las sumataciones están por encima de los estados del sistema, y también se aplican al sistema y a su entorno si las sumaciones están por encima del mayor número de estados del sistema y entorno juntos. (El modelo de dipolo magnético de la Figura 11.1 incluso muestra un sistema capaz de interactuar con cualquiera de los dos entornos, una característica que se necesita si el sistema se usa para la conversión de energía). A continuación se presentan algunos resultados para un sistema y su entorno interactuando.
