Internet permite la investigación a un costo mucho menor; también puede cruzar más fácilmente las fronteras geográficas y acelerar el proceso de investigación.
Esto no quiere decir que no haya desventajas. Si bien Internet permite llegar a un grupo mucho más grande de personas sin el costo de los facilitadores, esto sí conlleva algunos desafíos. Por ejemplo, no se pueden controlar los entornos en los que se está recopilando la información. Para una muestra en línea, es importante enfocarse en obtener el número correcto de personas para que su estudio sea estadísticamente viable. Si sus preguntas no están cuidadosamente redactadas, las preguntas confusas podrían dar lugar a respuestas defectuosas o no relevantes. Adicionalmente, los incentivos en línea podrían conducir a respuestas que no son veraces, lo que significa que el valor de los datos podría ser cuestionable. Ciertos grupos objetivo no son accesibles a través de Internet, por lo que es importante que consideres cuidadosamente a quién estás tratando de llegar.
De ninguna manera se debe descontar el valor de la investigación en Internet, pero es importante considerar cuidadosamente la naturaleza del estudio, e interrogar la validez y legitimidad de los datos como una representación válida. Los datos son significativos solo si son representativos, así que asegúrate de establecer metas y expectativas realistas para tu investigación.
