Entre las muchas capacidades de la química está su capacidad para predecir si un proceso ocurrirá bajo condiciones específicas. La termodinámica, el estudio de las relaciones entre la energía y el trabajo asociados a los procesos químicos y físicos, proporciona esta capacidad predictiva. Capítulos anteriores de este texto han descrito diversas aplicaciones de la termoquímica, un aspecto importante de la termodinámica que se refiere al flujo de calor que acompaña a las reacciones químicas y las transiciones de fase. En este capítulo se introducirán conceptos termodinámicos adicionales, entre ellos aquellos que permiten predecir cualquier cambio químico o físico bajo un conjunto de condiciones dadas.
