    ¿Qué tienen en común las vidrieras, el protector solar, los discos duros magnéticos, los catalizadores heterogéneos, la electrónica de consumo, la ropa resistente a las manchas, los vidrios autolimpiantes y los diagnósticos médicos? Todos ellos derivan alguna propiedad especial y utilidad de los materiales a nanoescala: elementos ordinarios y compuestos inorgánicos como el oro, la plata, el TiO 2, el cromo, el SiO 2 y el silicio que adquieren propiedades diferentes cuando sus dimensiones características están en algún punto entre 1 y 100 nm. En este capítulo aprenderemos sobre la ciencia básica de los nanomateriales, es decir, de qué se trata de su tamaño lo que los hace diferentes.
