El tubo enrollado del intestino delgado se subdivide en tres regiones. De proximal (en el estómago) a distal, estos son el duodeno, yeyuno e íleon (Figura\(\PageIndex{1}\)).
Histología
La pared del intestino delgado está compuesta por las mismas cuatro capas típicamente presentes en el sistema alimentario. Sin embargo, tres características de la mucosa y submucosa son únicas. Estas características, que aumentan la superficie de absorción del intestino delgado más de 600 veces, incluyen pliegues circulares, vellosidades y microvellosidades (Figura 20.9). Estas adaptaciones son más abundantes en los dos tercios proximales del intestino delgado, donde se produce la mayor parte de la absorción.
